Global News Of Note: Japanese Economy Expands While Chinese Economy Struggles

What happens abroad impacts MSCI members in North America. Here is the latest economic, trade, and other policy news of note for the last week:

  • As Reuters reported, China produced 90.8 million metric tons of crude steel in July, a figure that was up 11.5 percent from July 2022, but down slightly from June 2023. China manufactured 626.51 million tons of steel in the first seven months of the year. That figure was 2.5 percent higher than in the same period for 2022.
  • The Japanese economy grew at an annualized rate of six percent in the second quarter of 2023, its third straight quarter of growth. First-quarter growth, at 3.7 percent, also was better than previously reported. The second quarter improvement was due in large part to a significant increase in exports. Read more here.
