New Survey Shows Americans Understand Transitioning To Natural Gas Reduces Carbon Emissions

A new survey from the polling firm Morning Consult indicates that Americans believe that transitioning to natural gas will reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Specifically, the poll found:

  • 60 percent of Americans agree natural gas is a clean source of energy;
  • 64 percent of Americans support expanding the use of natural gas as an energy source in the United States;
  • 70 percent of Americans believe natural gas should play a role in the country’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and
  • 74 percent of Americans agree that U.S. lawmakers should approve investments in research for clean energy technologies.

The Metals Service Center Institute supports an all above energy policy that will keep energy costs affordable while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. According to the American Gas Association, natural gas helps achieve both goals. For example:

  • Emissions from natural gas distribution systems have fallen 70 percent since 1990;
  • Carbon dioxide emissions from residences using natural gas for space heating, water heating, cooking, and clothes drying are about 18 percent lower than those attributable to an all-electric home; and
  • An Energy Star natural gas household could have a carbon footprint that is 16 percent lower than an Energy Star heat pump and 28 percent lower emissions compared to an electrical resistance furnace.
