Canada Announces Additional Sanctions On Russia That Will Impact Metals Industry

The Government of Canada has announced that it has banned certain services to Russia’s extractive resource and refining and chemical manufacturing sectors.

The list of services that fall under the ban include:

  • Sales of metals, ores, timber, building materials and certain types of chemicals;
  • Repair services incidental to metal products, machinery and equipment;
  • Construction work,
  • Specified activities regarding fuel sales and trading;
  • Transport of certain fuels;
  • Leasing of machinery and equipment;
  • Research and development services;
  • Technical testing and analysis services;
  • Services incidental to mining;
  • Services incidental to energy distribution; and more.

The ban also includes mining of coal and lignite, extraction of crude petroleum and natural gas, mining of metal ores, other mining and quarrying, mining support service activities, manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products, and the manufacture of chemicals and chemical products.

These new rules meant that any person in Canada, and Canadians outside Canada, cannot provide these services to Russia or any person in Russia in relation to certain industries in Russia. Canadian businesses involved in providing any of these services to Russia or to any person in Russia should assess whether their business activities fall under the new regulation.
