End Use Market Analysis: Rail

August 21, 2024 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM CDT

The railcar sector is a large consumer of steel, and the North American railcar fleet is enormous, with more than 1.6 million cars. However, it is going through a transition in many sub-fleets. Retirement exposures are growing. New car demand will follow. The builder and supplier base has consolidated.

Add on other rail sectors and opportunities, such as last fall’s $1.4 billion U.S. government infrastructure funding for dozens of federal projects. Or new passenger lines such as Brightline West from Las Vegas to Los Angeles.

What will these investments mean for demand for steel, aluminum, and other industrial metals products?
