Global News: China Manufacturing Production Down As Britain Consider New Aluminum Tariffs

What happens abroad impacts MSCI members in North America. Here is the latest economic, trade, and other policy news of note for the last week:

  • S&P Global reports China’s manufacturing production index of steel consumption produced was at 102 points in April, down by 28 points from the same period in 2021 and by 16 points from 2020.
  • China’s aluminum imports fell 37.7 percent from April 2021 to April 2022 because of a decline in domestic consumption. China has imported less than 200,000 tons of aluminum for four straight months.
  • Reuters reports the United Kingdom’s Trade Remedy Authority has ruled Britain could impose anti-dumping duties of up to 29 percent on aluminum extrusions from China to protect domestic producers since the products are being sold in Britain at lower prices than they are being sold in China.
