Global News Of Note: Canada Pledges New Trade Pacts While China Trade Slows

What happens abroad impacts MSCI members in North America. Here is the latest economic, trade, and other policy news of note for the last week:

  • Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was in Indonesia last week where he discussed the potential for trade deals in the region. Specifically, according to CBC, Trudeau said Canada and Indonesia have committed to signing a bilateral trade deal by the end of 2024. Prime Minister Trudeau said Canada also plans to finalize a separate deal by 2025 with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Read more here.
  • As CNBC reported, data from the Chinese government showed another monthly decline in imports and exports from the country in August. Exports were 8.8 percent lower in August from a year ago while imports dropped 7.3 percent year-over-year. Imports have fallen every month in 2023 from the same period a year before and exports have fallen year-on-year for every month since April.
