Global News Of Note: Countries Take Action Against Chinese Metal Product Dumping
What happens abroad impacts MSCI members in North America. Here is the latest economic, trade, and other policy news of note for the last week:
- As Japan News reported, in late July the World Trade Organization (WTO) ruled China’s antidumping duty on Japanese stainless steel products violated a WTO agreement. (China had been imposing tariffs on three types of Japanese stainless steel products since 2019.) China opted not to appeal, which confirms Japan’s legal victory. The Chinese government must now take corrective measures.
- The Ukrainian government has made a final ruling on imports to certain coated steel products from China, finding that illegal dumping of these products contributed to a 1.9 percent decrease in manufacturers’ capacity utilization in Ukraine. Steel Orbis said the ruling is likely to “terminate” the import of these products into Ukraine from China. New duties will take effect in early September 2023.
