Global News Of Note: Metals Trade Data From China

What happens abroad impacts MSCI members in North America. Here is the latest economic, trade, and other policy news of note for the last week:

  • Chinese imports of unwrought aluminum and aluminum products fell by 24.3 percent between January 2024 and January 2025 to 290,000 tons. In 2024, China’s total aluminum imports reached 2.3 million tons, down 16 percent from 2023. The drop in imports aligns with government initiatives to boost domestic production and improve recycling infrastructure. Read more at this link.
  • In the first two months of 2025, Chinese mining companies reduced iron ore production by 12.6 percent compared to the same period in 2024. Iron ore imports to China fell by 8.4 percent year-over-year, meanwhile. Read more at this link.
  • Chinese exports of steel bars rose to 1.29 million metric tons (mt), a number that was up 79.8 percent between February 2024 and February 2025. Exports of wire rod and angles and channels fell to 140,000 mt and 430,000 mt, meanwhile. Those numbers were down 8.1 percent and up 25.7 percent, respectively, year-over-year.
