How To Support MSCI’s Scholarship Program During COVID-19

One of the most enjoyable ways the MSCI community connects each year is through its chapter scholarship fundraising programs. Those events obviously are on hold at least through April, but the scholarship program will endure. Over the last 16 years, MSCI has awarded more than 3,700 scholarships totaling $7.8 million. In 2019 alone, MSCI chapters awarded 380 scholarships worth nearly $850,000.

This program represents what is best about our metals community and on April 10 MSCI President and CEO Bob Weidner wrote that MSCI member companies’ generosity continues even during this time of profound economic uncertainty. One family-owned company recently sent a note outlining what the scholarship program has meant to his company’s families. The company also enclosed a sizable monetary gift to help sustain the program. The Southern California Chapter, under the leadership of Nick Gonzales from WESTMET International and its board, already has received contributions totaling $20,000—despite having to cancel its April 27 golf fundraising event. MSCI will continue to match up to $10,000 whatever the chapters raise for the scholarship program.

In addition to corporate support, individuals and other friends of the industry also may contribute to our scholarship efforts by making personal donations to MSCI’s 501(c)(3) arm. Please contact Janet O’Callaghan at jocallaghan@msci.org for information.
