Mark Carney Is Canada’s New Prime Minister
Canada has a new prime minister, but some of its existing cabinet ministers have remained in place. On March 8, Canada’s Liberal Party elected former central banker Mark Carney as its new leader. He received 86.8 percent of all votes cast. Carney was sworn in on March 14 in Rideau Hall’s historic ballroom and will face Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre in national elections that are expected to be called in the coming days or weeks.
Before those elections happen, however, Prime Minister Carney has pledged to work to address tariffs that have been imposed on Canadian exports by the U.S. government. According to The Associated Press, the new leader has said he is willing to meet with President Donald Trump if he shows respect for Canadian sovereignty.
Prime Minister Carney also has been assembling his cabinet, though it does appears as if several members of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet will remain in their current positions. Those individuals include Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly, Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne, Finance Minister Dominic Leblanc, and Public Safety Minister David McGuinty.
