Industrial metals leaders focus on
sustainability, building more diverse community
June 20, 2023, Rolling Meadows, Ill. – The Metals Service Center Institute (MSCI) will hold its 2023 Annual Meeting jointly with the Steel Manufacturers Association in Washington, D.C. from June 21-23. The event is an opportunity for industrial metals service center and mill leaders to discuss specific opportunities for the sector, including advocacy for the future growth of the metals industry, how to enhance the diversity within a legacy industry, and how to reduce the metals supply chain’s carbon footprint.
During the meeting, MSCI will announce it is developing a national scholarship program for employees of member companies enrolled in an accredited trade school. This scholarship program is in addition to MSCI’s 15-year-old program for children of member company employees. Since inception, that legacy program has awarded more than 4,700 scholarships, totaling more than $10 million. This program will continue as the new one is implemented.
The 2023 Annual Meeting will feature remarks from:
- U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Michael Regan;
- U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Katherine Tai;
- Karla Lewis, President and CEO, Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co.;
- Leon Topalian, Chair, President, and CEO, Nucor Corporation;
- Greg Bertelsen, Chief Executive Officer, Climate Leadership Council;
- Katie McCall Larson, Vice President, Government Affairs and Sustainability, SSAB Americas;
- Dan Needham, Executive Vice President, Commercial, Nucor Corporation;

- Anja Manuel, a top adviser to former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and principal, Rice, Hadley, Gates & Manuel, LLC
“The world has changed since our last in-person Annual Meeting four years ago,” said MSCI President and CEO M. Robert Weidner, III. “While operating through a global pandemic, our members were seeking ways to improve diversity and sustainability. I’m proud that MSCI led its community of industrial metals companies toward growth and change. This evolution would not have been possible without the leadership of our Board of Directors, including Chair Rick Marabito. I’m grateful to Rick for his stewardship and am awed by his commitment to the people who make this industry so vibrant.”
The 2023 Annual Meeting marks the end of Olympic Steel CEO Marabito’s two-year term as MSCI board chair. Among other accomplishments, Marabito oversaw the creation of Forge Ahead, MSCI’s initiative to attract and retain Millennial and Gen Z employees to the industrial metals industry, the creation of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion councils, a refresh of the long-standing and successful Strategic Metals Management executive education program at Washington University, and the launch of the organization’s new Apprenticeship Program.
Marabito will hand his duties over to Russel Metals President and CEO John Reid. It has been nearly three decades since the chair has been occupied by an executive from a member company headquartered in Canada.
“Metals service centers and mills emerged from the pandemic stronger than ever,” Marabito said. “Likewise, MSCI is operating from a position of strength, as we reimagined how to serve our members, adding new industry intelligence products and initiatives and communicating best practices through free, on-demand webinars. I thank MSCI staff and directors for their creativity and commitment to our member companies, and want to welcome John as the new board chair. The industry and MSCI will benefit immensely from John’s capable leadership.”
Former Reliance Steel & Aluminum CEO and Chair Jim Hoffman, who was Board of Directors vice chair; Kaiser Aluminum President and CEO Keith Harvey, who chaired MSCI’s Compensation Committee; and SSAB Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Colleen Phillip, who was Board of Directors treasurer and chaired MSCI’s Finance Committee, also recently completed their terms on the Board of Directors.
“Rick has served MSCI as a dynamic, tireless, and thoughtful chair and I want to commend him as well as thank him for his service,” Reid said. “MSCI has always been, and remains, a North American trade organization. I look forward to working with the team at MSCI, the membership, and the board to ensure MSCI continues to develop exciting initiatives that will help its members think about how we take this important legacy industry into the future.”
Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co. President and CEO Karla Lewis and Kloeckner Metals CEO John Ganem will serve as the vice chairs of the Board. Steel Dynamics Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, and Corporate Secretary Theresa Wagler will serve as treasurer.
MSCI members also elected four new directors to the Board:

- Stephen Koch, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Reliance Steel & Aluminum
- Dan Needham, Executive Vice President, Commercial, Nucor Corporation

MSCI also will award its Lifetime Achievement Award to Alfred M. Castle, who founded A.M. Castle & Co. in 1890. This award is given to leaders who look over the horizon to see what is coming and determine how the metals industry should respond.
