New Report Focuses On Women In Manufacturing

Thomas and Women in Manufacturing recently released a joint study, the Career Advancement for Manufacturing Annual Report, which examines how and why women seek careers in the manufacturing sector.

The report, available here, found:

  • Women Would Recommend A Manufacturing Career To Other Women. While men are more likely to actively seek out a career in manufacturing compared to women, 75 percent of women in industry say they are likely or very likely to recommend a career in manufacturing.
  • Women Are More Likely To “Fall Into” The Industry. Fifty-four percent of men said they fell into the manufacturing industry while 46 percent said they actively sought out a career in the sector. The gap is larger for women. Seventy percent of women said they fell into the industry while 30 percent said they actively chose the field.
  • STEM Education Matters. Women were far more likely to seek out a career in industry because of access to a STEM program. According to the survey, 48 percent of women sought out their careers because they graduated from a STEM program, while only 13 percent of men did.
  • Referrals Less Of An Impact For Women. Twenty-eight percent of men received direct referrals that landed them their jobs in industry while only 25 percent of women did.

As a reminder, in 2020, MSCI launched a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) task force dedicated to reducing bias in the metals industry. One of the task force’s first objectives was to execute an industry-wide Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Report. MSCI released this report last fall. It is free for all MSCI members.

Want to know how your company’s DEI initiatives measure up against others in the metals industry? This report synthesizes the results of a detailed survey of nearly 50 mills and service centers and provides actionable intelligence that will help MSCI members no matter where they are in their own DEI journey.
