Quenching

• Heat above the alloy’s critical temperature
• Rapidly cool (quench) in oil or water
• Increase strength and hardness
• Extremely hard and brittle

Tempering

• Heat to specific temperature
• Cool in still air
• Reduces hardness and strength
• Increases ductility and toughness
