1st digit – family of steel
Example: 1xxx – Carbon Steel

2nd digit – additional elements
Examples
10xx – nothing additional
11xx – Added sulfur
12xx – Added sulfur and phosphorous
15xx – Added boron

3rd and 4th digit – nominal carbon content
Example: AISI 1018 – .18% carbon
